The Greek Association of
Architects (SADAS-PEA), CRISIS Lab and the Department of Architecture of the
University of Ioannina are announcing this year’s UMAR Summer School in Epirus,
Greece. The workshop will be hosted at Ioannina, one of the Epirus’s region
most vibrant and historical cities, for an intensive week between September 4th
and September 10th. University of Ioannina include the neoclassical
Papazoglou building at the city center and Aris Konstaninides’s XENIA seminal
modernist hotel premises at the port of Igoumenitsa. The Summer School will be
co-organised with do.co.mo.mo gr. and Ctrl_Space Lab collaborative architecture
platform.
Addressing the themes
proposed by UMAR for this year’s Summer School, this proposal, under the title
The Museum of Modern Architecture at the Mediterranean (MMAM) answers to a synthesis
of the following questions: a collective study of 20th century architectural
heritage, architectural education and the contemporary challenges and
opportunities it faces, sustainable heritage and adaptive reuse. Participants
will be called to map out and narrate both the distinct local Mediterranean 20th
century architectural traditions, and the common elements and conditions.
Specific attention will be paid in defining areas of controversy and in
constructing the tools enabling their negotiation and representation,
especially when asked to communicate them to the wider audiences of MMAM. Participants
will be asked to co-form a nomadic exhibition in a hybrid of contemporary
digital and physical tools and representations with the intention to present it
in different local contexts and spaces. The Workshop situates itself in an
interstice space between (history, critique)theory and design. In that, it
attempts to address the topic of an identity (modern Mediterranean
architecture) and its representation(s) in an open and critical manner.
MMAM will be open to 18
participants with a priority in diversity and representation of different
architectural cultures from the wider Mediterranean regional community.
Registration Opens on the 1st
of May 2022 and will be open for a full month. Applications, including a short
CV, a sample of design portfolio (10MB max.) and a paragraph of intent
(outlining the reasons for applying to the Summer School), as well as any
questions regarding the Summer School shall be addressed to: mmam.workshop.2022@gmail.com .
All future communication and
updates regarding MMAM Summer School will be published through the dedicated fb
page @MMAMSummerWorkshop to be found at this address https://www.facebook.com/MMAMSummerWorkshop .
